‘Spice’ bill clears Senate

By KTVA CBS 11 News 7:05 PM March 28, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

A bill banning “Spice” and similar drugs cleared the Alaska Senate Friday.

Senate Bill 173 aims to curb the sale of synthetic drugs by banning misleading statements on their packaging.

Sponsored by Sen. Kevin Meyer (R-Anchorage), it mimics an ordinance passed by the Anchorage Assembly earlier this year.

SB 173 requires Spice labels to include a detailed list of contents, accurate directions for use and the name of the manufacturer.

It also creates a $500 fine for possessing synthetic drugs like Spice or bath salts.

The bill now heads to the House.
