The Seward Highway reopened Thursday evening.

Original story

Anchorage Fire has closed the Seward Highway near milepost 105, south of Anchorage, due to a wildfire near the roadway.

The road is closed near Falls Creek, to all non-emergency traffic, the Fire Department says.

Anchorage 511 reports the flames are near the roadway.

AFD says the fireline stretches about 50 yards wide and is moving up the hillside. Crews are actively working to extinguish the flames. The Forestry units and the Fire Department say they’re having success in their suppression efforts.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area until the roadway has reopened.

Traffic is backed up for miles due to a wildfire on the side of the Seward Highway south of Anchorage.
