Search crews rescue injured hiker from Whittier mountain

By KTVA CBS 11 News 8:48 AM April 1, 2014

A Texas man injured during a Sunday hike near Whittier is currently in good condition at Providence Alaska Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

According to Alaska State Troopers, 39-year-old Scott Hueske was hiking on Mount Maynard when a leg injury left him unable to walk. Wearing only a sweater and Under Armor pants, Hueske told Whittier police he was cold, wet and exhausted after leaving the trail to hike several miles towards the summit of the mountain.

Troopers said four searchers from the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group responded to Hueske’s call for help, and the Rescue Coordination Center from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson supported the search with “aerial assets.”

The injured hiker was located just after 8:30 a.m. Monday, more than 14 hours after making a call for help. While troopers said he was initially hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries, a hospital representative said Hueske’s condition has since improved.
