Road to Valdez remains closed due to avalanches

By KTVA CBS 11 News 4:28 PM January 26, 2014

The Richardson Highway could remain closed until at least Tuesday, DOT&PF officials said.

Update: Sherri Pierce, an information officer for the City of Valdez, said a shelter has been opened for residents asked to voluntarily evacuate from a subdivision near the slide area. Nobody has yet stayed at the shelter, she said.

ANCHORAGE – The road to Valdez remains closed Sunday following some of the largest avalanches ever seen in Thompson Pass.

The Richardson Highway was buried under 30 feet of ice and snow in places, state transportation officials said. Poor weather conditions and continued avalanche danger meant crews from the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities were unable to begin clearing the highway after the first slides Friday morning.

After another avalanche blocked Lowe River Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Keystone Canyon.

The Richardson Highway could remain closed until at least Tuesday, DOT&PF officials said.
