Alaska’s Region IV competes amongst themselves.
ANCHORAGE – Dimond is the team to beat at this year’s riflery championship. The Lynx came into the meet by having accumulated the most season points followed by Eagle River and South. The CIC is in Alaska’s Region IV and competes amongst themselves.
“Anchorage has the largest shooting program at the high school level in the state,” said Eagle River Head Coach Jeff Parker. “We’re trying to get more schools involved but us being in region four; we just only have our own schools right here.”
The bulk of competition took place on Friday with each team fielding eight players. On Saturday, four shooters compete from each team concluding with finals.
The shooters use what’s known as precision air rifles.
Parker said it’s just one of the reasons why the sport has improved in the last ten years.
“From a side-cocking rifle to one that is compressed air, the competitors don’t have to change their natural point of aim to shoot,” he said.
