Some residents are still drying out from latest episode
ANCHORAGE – Some people who live near Valley of the Moon Park are fed up with flooding, and they want the municipality to do something about it.
A flood 10 days ago sent icy water into the basements of four homes adjacent to the creek. It’s not the first time. Homeowners said there have been at least four floods in the last five years. One of the largest floods was in 2009. The municipality did take action at that time, installing a bypass culvert that could divert excess water after a storm.
The system worked well in the summer, but can clog with ice in the winter which can lead to flooding. The water has also pooled under a tunnel on the bike path, leaving two feet of ice on the trail. Residents believe the existing culverts are too small and some would like the municipality to build a bridge.
While engineers said they recognize a problem exists, they’re just beginning to talk about a long-term fix.
