The holidays wouldn’t be complete without a bit of sweet indulgence. From Christmas cookies to fruitcake, almost every family has a dessert that’s become a holiday staple.
At the Zaletel household, Zach and his daughter, Zelda, make potica around this time every year. It’s a Slovenian nut bread, traditionally baked for celebratory occasions, Zaletel says.
“Just like when I was growing up making this with family and extended family, it really reminds me of the holidays,” he said. “Smelling potica baking with the honey and the walnuts together is something that always made me think, ‘Mmm, Christmas.'”
Preparing the dough for filling requires all hands on deck, the Anchorage dad notes. Zelda assists in the rolling out of the dough on the countertop until it’s paper thin.
Potica requires effort beyond your normal pie crust, but it’s worth the memories made in the process, Zaletel says.
