At least eight officers added to overnight shift
ANCHORAGE – After a recent wave of late night violence, municipal officials announced the addition of at least eight new police officers to overnight shifts.
A statement released by the office of Mayor Dan Sullivan Friday outlined the change, and said the officers will patrol Downtown by foot and cruiser. The decision came after a series of meetings with police and Downtown organizations, and a string of violence during bar break hours.
Last month, 38-year-old Adrian Augustine died after a “melee” behind a 4th Avenue bar, and police have reported multiple other brawls and assaults during bar break hours recently. In the statement released by his office, Sullivan said the additional patrols would help deter the ongoing Downtown crime problem.
“We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the downtown district and feel safe in our city,” Sullivan said.
