People Mover teams up with Google

By Shannon Ballard Photojournalist: Jared Mazurek - 7:50 PM July 16, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

People Mover has partnered with Google to make it easier than ever to plan a trip around Anchorage.

“You can search by a certain address, landmark, business name or cross street,” said Christine Sondej, public transportation planning manager with the Municipality of Anchorage.

The collaboration allows riders to check their specific routes online.

The trip planner is hosted by Google Maps. It lets commuters know what time they need to be ready to go and how much the trip will cost. Walking directions are also provided to and from the bus stop.

“It’s going to make it easier for everyone, especially tourists and others who are used to accessing transit data and driving directions in Google Maps,” Sondej said.

The trip planner uses People Mover’s schedule to coordinate routes. However, the planner can’t tell you exactly where each bus is or what time it will arrive.

It may seen like Anchorage is years behind in bringing this technology to commuters. The municipality says that’s because it’s been a headache to get People Mover’s old transit data ready and compatible with the Google Maps system.

It’s worth all the effort, according to public transit officials, if it make anyone’s commute a little easier.

“It’s a great thing for People Mover and an even better thing for our passengers,” Sondej said.

The Anchorage trip planner can be accessed through peoplemover.org or by going straight to Google Maps.
