Patrols to increase for July 4 weekend

By KTVA Alaska Photojournalist: Jared Mazurek - 9:47 PM July 3, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

Twenty-eight drivers were arrested by Anchorage police for DUIs during the Fourth of July weekend in 2013. Eight of those arrests took place on the holiday.

Those numbers are why the Anchorage Police Department is ramping up patrols beginning Thursday night.

“Fourth of July, Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend — obviously because the traffic on the roads is elevated, people are going out of town and doing that kind of stuff, going to parties,” said officer Kelly Huston. “Obviously DUIs are a big problem and we’re trying to do that kind of enforcement as best we can.”

APD’s additional targeted patrols run from Thursday through Sunday morning. Officers will be aggressively targeting drunk, dangerous and distracted drivers throughout the municipality.

Area law enforcement encourages all Alaskans to take part in keeping roads safe.

They’re asking everyone to remain REDDI, which stands for Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately, by calling 911.
