The ship sat idle for several near Tracy Arm south of Juneau while a tugboat and divers worked to dislodge the whale carcass.
After freeing the whale, a boat then towed the whale to shore.
A team of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration marine mammal specialists will perform a necropsy on the whale on Friday to determine how it died.
While scientists don't know for sure what kind of a whale it was, officials say it appears to be a young humpback.
