Kodiak Assembly Sets Lobby Goals for JuneauIn advance of the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly members traveling to Juneau next week to lobby for Kodiak Island projectsIn advance of the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly members traveling to Juneau next week to lobby for Kodiak Island projects, the assembly approved several resolutions Thursday to assert some funding and legislative priorities to the Alaska Legislature.
The project receiving the most community comments was the borough’s resolution to help secure legislative funding for the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association’s request to fertilize Karluk, Frazer and Spiridon lakes to combat depressed sockeye salmon returns. Rick Berns, the mayor of Old Harbor and a commercial fisherman, went on record to thank the borough for supporting the project. “The bulk of our fishermen depend on the Alitak area fish,” Berns said. “Frazer represents a big portion of the spring return in that area. Any efforts of enhancing that would greatly improve the incomes of the community, residents (and) fishermen of Old Harbor.” Another resolution forwards the wish lists of major capital projects for each community within the borough to the state Legislature. The City of Kodiak’s top capital improvement project is $3,528,000 to construct an ultraviolet water treatment facility. The communities of Akhiok and Karluk are also asking for nearly $3 million for the construction of water treatment plants as their top priorities. Three Kodiak Island communities are looking to improve their dock facilities as their top capital request. Port Lions is asking for $8 million for a city dock and ferry terminal replacement. Ouzinkie is asking for $4 million for their dock and industrial area construction and development. Larsen Bay is asking for $550,000 to pay for the design, engineering and cost analysis for a deepwater dock and moorage for a fuel barge. Old Harbor hopes to secure $6 million for a hydroelectric power project as their top capital improvement. |
