A fitting way to celebrate the end of black history month for one local school tonight

The William Tyson Elementary School student body gathered to honor the past and inspire the future at its Black History Month tribute.

The annual event featured songs, poems, plays, and a reading of important moments in Black American history such as the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery in the United States, public school desegregation and the first black baseball player Jackie Robinson playing in the major leagues.

“It’s to celebrate your ethnicity and to celebrate our diversity and in this school we have 20 languages and over 200 bilingual kids, and we just like to celebrate,” said William Tyson Elementary School Principal John Kito.

The William Tyson Black History Month celebration featured the entire school comprised of students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
