What It Takes To Be An Anchorage Police Officer

It’s a daunting hiring process that includes a physical agility test, written exam, personal interview and a polygraph.

If you are looking to make a career change you may want to consider the Anchorage Police Department. The pay and benefits are great, but the job isn’t easy and filling the 28 positions the department is looking for won’t be easy either.

The hiring process starts online where the list of items that can get you rejected right off the bat is long. More than three speeding tickets in the last three years? Forget it.
A conviction for almost any type of crime will disqualify you. And, contrary to popular opinion, it’s okay to have tried marijuana provided it was several years ago. But even using a hallucinogenic drug once puts you out of the running.

Anchorage Police Captain Dave Koch says the process is designed to find people who will succeed as officers and it doesn’t stop there.

“There’s also a written exam, a physical agility test, a psychological exam and a polygraph test,” says Koch. “If they make it through that then they may be invited to the academy.”

The academy is scheduled to start this fall but the hiring process for officer candidates begins right now. You can do that online at www.joinapd.org <http://www.joinapd.org>.

The last day to apply is June 24.
