On Saturday, Feb. 27, just before 6:30 p.m. Anchorage Police responded to a call of shots fired inside the Dimond Center at 800 East Dimond Boulevard at the far west end of the mall near the barber shop.

One man had been shot multiple times and another man who was fleeing the area was tackled as he exited the west doors near the O'Brady's Restaurant by an off-duty Alaska State Trooper.  The man who was shot died a short time later at a local hospital.  He has been identified as 29-year-old Edwing Matos.

Initial reports believed the man tackled by the off-duty trooper was the suspect involved in the shooting.  He was brought to Anchorage Police Headquarters for questioning and released.  Anchorage Police Homicide Detectives interviewed more than a dozen witnesses throughout the night.  At this point they do not have anyone in custody or charged in the death of Mr. Matos.  Video surveillance at the mall has been recovered and detectives are continuing their investigation.

Initial interviews on scene indicate this was a gang related shooting.  However, further investigation did not find any indication of this being gang related.

Witnesses to the shooting report seeing a man wearing a wig and fake mustache.  He is described as a light skinned black male adult or possibly Hispanic, approximately 6' tall weighing between 220-240 pounds.  The suspect was wearing an oversized white sweatshirt and a white baseball hat.

The Dimond Center is the busiest mall in Anchorage attracting over 12 million visitors a year, double what the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport sees.
