Veteran Health Paradigm Shifts From Illness to Wellness Focus

Veteran Affairs administrators say there is a greater need to emphasize prevention and wellness for veterans.

A health care fair for veterans got a big turnout on Thursday.

Held at the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Muldoon, the event featured more than 40 booths of services available for vets from both the federal government and community service agencies.

VA administrators say there is a greater need to emphasize prevention and wellness for veterans, and many of the booths featured information on support groups and other services.

“More than the traditional primary care-based medicine, we are trying to branch out into the mind, the body and the spirit,” says VA doctor Gregory Bilberry.

He says they are also trying to reach out to younger vets to help them realize they may be eligible for VA services, too.

Bilberry says many have the perception that the VA is for those who have served for many years and are likely old and sick.

He says that is an impression the VA is working hard to dispel and that younger vets should come in and get registered for eligibility.
