'SaFire' is making its official debut this month

ANCHORAGE - SaFire – it's a new Alaska magazine describing itself as "the hottest in alternative culture."

The title of the magazine is based on the birthstones sapphire and amethyst that are associated with co-founders Michelle Buchanan and Tina Schacher, and with the respective colors blue and purple.

"The purple and blue part of the flame is the part you have to look closely to see,” Buchanan said

So SaFire, making its official debut this month, is aimed at people and interests outside of the mainstream - that includes numerous lifestyle subgroups, but particularly body modifications.

"Body modifications are tattoos, piercings, even changing the color of your hair to a not natural colors,” said Schacher. “It's things that... a lot of people do body modification to give an outward experience of their inner being."

The first issue includes numerous photographs of bodies illustrated in various ways, including with paint.

"There are so many locally talented photographers, models, hair stylists, make-up artists,” Buchanan said.

SaFire made its debut at the state fair, where copies were handed out, but the real coming out party is this Saturday at Mad Myrna’s downtown, with a wide range of performances and acts.

"Mad Myrna's has extended their patio area with tents, so we'll have aerial acrobats doing performances," said Scacher.

Unlike F magazine, which has a more highbrow approach to the arts and culture, SaFire has a distinctly underground feel.

"There's so many subgroups that fall underneath alternative that we hit a large variety of people between the ages of 18 and 54, male and female evenly,” Schacher said.

The new publication is intended to be a quarterly publication and will include advice columns and music reviews in addition to the body art. It will be available by subscription and at certain locations, including tattoo parlors in Anchorage and Wasilla.

Now Schacher and Buchanan will find out if SaFire can catch fire.
