UAA Students Hope to Inspire Consensus on Native Issues

University of Alaska Anchorage students held a mock summit to show that listening to each other can help build a consensus on Native issues.

University of Alaska Anchorage students say they would like our state’s native leaders to come to an agreement on subsistence issues.

Students put on a mock summit at the UAA Professional Building and said they would like to show the Alaska Federation of Natives and the Tribal Leader Summit that listening to what each other has to say could help in handling Alaska native issues.

“What we want to see happen eventually is the consensus between two parties,” Summit Facilitator Crystal Curran said. “Because as of right now there is not a consensus on a lot of topics and there's a lot of Alaskan native people that are unaware that there is even a conflict.”

The summit is part of an experimental class launched by the Alaska Native Studies Department at UAA in which students learn traditional Alaska native ways of discourse.
