With all this snow, you might not think of ice cream, but one local business is using it to give back to the community in a way that is bringing in dozens of Anchorage families, in more ways than one.

You might know it as a local hot spot for cold treats, but Tastee Freez is also actively involved in everything from fundraisers for local schools to food drives for Bean’s Café and even local park clean-up efforts.

Sunday, they were using ice cream to bring Anchorage families in out of the cold for another good cause.

There are a couple of staples at Tastee Freez – ice cream is just one of them. So is giving back, which is why the local restaurant was hosting its annual “Sundaes with Santa,” donating all proceeds from afternoon ice cream sales to one of Anchorage’s most unique emergency shelters.

Just like every shelter in town, the Salvation Army’s McKinnel House has been packed since winter began. With 16 families, a waiting list and Christmas right around the corner, there are plenty of needs. But there are also plenty of people to fill them.

The owner of Tastee Freez said he expected to bring in about $400 from Sunday’s ice cream sales, all of which will be donated to the McKinnel House, and that’s in addition to donations from customers.
