Storm Assistance Still Available for Alaskans

ANCHORAGE - While East Coast residents clean up after Sandy, Alaskans are still recovering from the widespread September flooding. The Department of Homeland security says damage was assessed for both private homes and public infrastructure. The agency set up a number of disaster assistance centers for homeowners to submit damage applications.

About 700 to 800 homes were found to have some sort of storm damage, while at least 20 were destroyed completely. Damage to roads, bridges and the railroad is estimated to cost around $15 million.

Homeland Security Director John Madden says Hurricane Sandy should not impact any federal aid coming to Alaska.

“We often have disasters that happen concurrently or consecutively. Fires in the west, earthquakes in the east, storms in the north. And this is one that happens to be a large event on the east, but it doesn't take the resources of the nation to accomplish that. There will be other assets we can draw from to take care of Alaskans affected by last month's floods,” Madden said.
