The Alaska Department of Transportation has proposed building an 85-mile road to oil and gas fields in the Brooks Range.

The road would run from the Dalton Highway to Umiat, which is near what could be rich oil reserve fields.

State transportation managers say industry estimates show the fields could produce 50,000 barrels of crude per a day over the next three decades.

Governor Parnell has proposed spending eight million dollars to pay for an environmental impact review needed before construction can begin on the road this summer.
