Spenard Farmer’s Market to Make Its Summer Return

It may be cold and rainy outside, but in two weeks the local market will start up its community-based market days.

 The annual Spenard Farmer’s Market is getting ready to open up for the 2011 season.

 

The organizers of the market believe that it is important to expand farmer's markets and make Alaska-grown foods available throughout the Anchorage area.

 

The market is expected to have three times as many vendors as last year offering a variety of Alaska-grown produce, local seafood, live music, arts and crafts.

 

The founder of the Spendard Farmer’s Market, Mark Butler, hopes to be able to appeal to people from all walks of life. “ So we hope to expand the offerings to more and more people, not just the yuppies from Turnagain that are driving in their Volvos over here-- but also people in the neighborhood, who may not have as much money will be able using the Quest card to buy a lot of products here,” Butler said.  

 

The Alaska Division of Public Health is piloting a project to help farmer’s markets accept Food Stamp Quest cards this year.  

 

The market is the only one of its kind that accepts food stamps in Anchorage, and one of three in all of Alaska.

 

The market will be located on Spenard and 26th. Avenue under the windmill.

 

It starts May 21 and runs through October 1 between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
