ANCHORAGE - Hundreds of Alaska's finest athletes are gearing up for an action packed weekend as they compete in the Special Olympics winter games. The Special Olympics of Alaska will highlight five sports this weekend including downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, floor hockey and relays.

This year's games will feature a unified sport program which partners Special Olympians with athletes without disabilities.

Ayesha Abdul-Jillil said, "It means a lot to me my family supports me a lot throughout Special Olympics; they're always out there cheering me on, and [there are] great staff we have been working together on getting everything prepared."

All events are open to the public, with opening ceremonies happening Friday night at 6:30 at East High School. Find details of the event here.
