Safety Commission Discusses Taxi OrdinanceAnchorage Assemblyman Dick Traini wants to suspend the license of any taxi drivers charged with sexual assault.Anchorage’s Public Safety Advisory Commission met Wednesday to discuss the legality of a proposed ordinance covering chauffer’s licenses. Anchorage Assemblyman Dick Traini wants to suspend the license of any taxi drivers charged with sexual assault.
Municipal Attorney Dennis Wheeler said there are some holes in the proposed ordinance: It doesn’t address what to do if someone is falsely accused. He said the Commission should consider whether licenses should be reinstated in that case.
“Where does public safety come into play in that analysis?” Wheeler asked. “In the absence of either some further work of that division, or some explanation in terms of legislative intent by the Assembly, we'll have to try to fill in that void and I think it’s a fairly large one.”
The Commission is expected to report back to the Assembly with its findings, and the Assembly will hold a public hearing on the issue Tuesday.
