Rural School's Salad Bar Catches First Lady's AttentionKiana school offer fresh salad barALASKA - An Alaskan village school is being celebrated by the First Lady Wednesday night for its efforts to fight childhood obesity. With some help from the Nana Management Services Division, the Kiana school, in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District, put together a short video about a new salad bar in the school. The video won second place in the Alaska division of the “Let's Move Salads Bars to Schools” contest, which is part of Michelle Obama’s “let’s” campaign. The second place win was enough to get the program featured on the First Lady's website. The woman who helped make the video says the recognition is nice, but it's more important that the salad bar is showing kids fresh food is a possibility in challenging conditions. “A lot of what they get in the villages is canned, so getting fresh oranges, carrots, celery, and apples is something they were all on board with,” said Dawn Kimberlin, Director of Marketing for Nana Management Services. Kiana will be one of twelve schools in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District that will have a salad bar this upcoming school year.
