Small Business Development Center gives an assist to entrepreneurs

ANCHORAGE - Starting up a business is tough for anyone, and it’s even harder when you don’t have a business background.

“Can I afford to go into business for myself? Can we maintain enough business, especially in a place like Alaska,” Jesse Moe recalled wondering, remembering the questions that ran through his mind a year ago when devising a business plan for Lime Solar.

Moe, 26, and his business partner Chester Dyson, 26, have the technical background in engineering and renewable energy, but neither were too confident when it came to the ins and outs of starting a business.

So the two entrepreneurs sought the help of Grant Larsen from the Alaska Small Business Development Center.

"It’s the bookkeeping, it's the taxes, it's understanding what you're looking at when you're looking at an income statement or balance sheet," said Larsen during an entrepreneur’s workshop Wednesday night in Anchorage.

Larsen says Moe and Dyson of Lime Solar came to him for advice on getting their business going, applying for grants and loans, and making improvements to their business plan.

"We worked through three years of financial projections, which is pretty common of you are approaching a lender, and certainly a great idea anyway if you are just running a business,” said Larsen.

Lime Solar, which sells solar and wind power products and services, opened its storefront in Mountain View in April, and Moe says he hopes by the end of the year the company will be turning a profit.
