Three prisoners in the Anchorage Correctional Complex were raped over the course of a year, by the same federal convict.

State and federal officials say that such incidents are relatively rare, and they do not take them lightly.

It sounds like something out of the HBO prison series "Oz."

Three Alaska Native men who were prisoners at the Anchorage jail in 2009 and 2010 were threatened, placed in fear and sexually abused by the same man, a federal prisoner who is even now awaiting trial on unrelated sex trafficking charges.

Sabil Mujahid was convicted in U.S. District Court Wednesday on 13 felony counts stemming from those assaults.

The federal jury could not agree on charges related to a fourth alleged victim, also an Alaska Native.

"This individual targeted Alaska Natives," says U.S. Attorney for Alaska Karen Loeffler.

Loeffler says that victims of prison rape will get a fair shake from the Department of Justice, even though they're criminals themselves.

"We prosecute. We do it vigorously. I think we do it very, very well. But we also protect even those that we prosecute."

At the Alaska Department of Corrections, Director of Institutions Bryan Brandenburg says that reported rapes in the state's jails are infrequent.

In this latest case, Brandenburg says the assaults initially went undetected because all four of the victims were Mujahid's cellmates, the crimes occurred within the cell and no scuffle or screaming was overheard.

But Brandenburg says Mujahid was moved out of his two-person cell into segregation until an investigation into the first report of sexual abuse was concluded with no charges being brought.

"So at that time we did not keep him in segregation and he was moved back into population. And we did not find out about any of the other assaults until several months later when folks came forward to indicate that they had been assaulted. And then at that time we put Mr. Mujahid back into segregation."

Brandenburg and Loeffler agree that the key to solving such crimes is victims being willing to come forward.

"It wasn't easy on the individuals,” Loeffler said. “They have to come into court and they have to admit this happened to them. They did a wonderful job of standing up for themselves."

Mujahid faces sentences of up to life in prison on each of 10 of the 13 felonies he committed.

this is a result of warehousing prisoners and the paid to do not think mentality of our unionized public employees. Why Doesn't this article say anything about what the victims were incarcerated for? I'm betting it would come out to be minor alcohol related offences??? Why are minor offenders housed with violent offenders??? A person doing 3 days for a dwi can and is housed with convicted muderers everyday in Alaska's unionized corrections system. This will happen again

Solve the problem, castrate all the men before they get in prison. If they beat someone up or stab someone, cut off a hand each time.Sooner or later they get the message.

FBI statistics show that more "men" are raped each year than women, hard to believe but true, most all the man on man rapes occur in prisons or jails and the majority are non white males raping white males.this type of activity is nothing new, and mostly ignored by the media.

i agree TomL, not to pick on middle east or any other country but to at least shrink the number of criminals sneaking into the usa. we have enough of our own bad guys.

It is conspicuously missing whether the assailant was legally in this country. In this time of high sensitivity to illegal immigration, that would be something that the public "needs to know". I mention that only to highlight the common excuse given by media for publishing information that is harmful to America, or to individuals, and then omit information they censor.
