General was enroute to Whitehorse with vets when he passed. Yes, "intestinal strangulation" is very painful, and it strikes swiftly. Berkowitz sent General off with the vets as soon as he noticed. As for Mackey, he didn't start with sick dogs. He noticed they wouldn't eat and left them behind with his support crew at various check-point. As for the well-documented history of abuse, it is not documented by reputable sources (journalists, veterinarians, animal behaviorists, etc.). If you had ever interacted with an Alaskan husky, you'd know those dogs love to run & pull. They would wither away if you tried to make a house dog of any of them.

Berkowitz's dog General died in the 2013 Quest from intestinal volvulus with bowel infarction, which is very painful. Why didn't veterinarians notice that General was suffering? Didn't they examine him? Did Berkowitz notice that General was in pain and force him to race? Mushers have a long, well-documented history of forcing sick and injured dogs to run. In the 2013 Quest, Lance Mackey started the race with sick dogs who wouldn't eat or drink.
