Project Homeless Connect Provides One-Stop ServicesAnnual event has more than 60 providers, from housing information to haircutsANCHORAGE - Hundreds of people filed into the Egan Center Tuesday for the annual Project Homeless Connect. It’s a one-stop shop with more than 60 providers where people who are homeless—or in danger of becoming homeless—can receive services like medical and dental screenings, haircuts and housing information. Organizers say it would take about 50 miles of travel to visit all the providers separately, and clients say they’re glad they can just make one trip instead. “We walk everywhere, and it's hard to get to the DMV or the hospital and all these other places to get your records and whatnot when you could just come here,” said Brian Ivie. About 800 people were expected to attend and the event takes about 200 volunteers to run. "There's such a need, and I work down at the Soup Kitchen as a volunteer and I'm on the board of directors, and I just love the people. I see the need in the community and love to be available to them,” said volunteer Sherrie Laurie. On any given night, about 4,000 people in Anchorage are homeless. |
