Problems With Peeping TomsA Ketchikan man is behind bars for possession of child pornography that all stemmed from a hidden video camera.Original article posted July 22, 2010 A Ketchikan man is behind bars for possession of child pornography that all stemmed from a hidden video camera. Late Wednesday night, Alaska State Troopers responded to a call of a hidden camera that someone found wired into a teenager's room in Ketchikan. The images were being transmitted to a video recorder in a separate part of the house.< When 35-year-old Jose Diorec III was confronted about the hidden camera, troopers say he grabbed the video cassette, destroyed it, and then threw the film into the woods.
After troopers further investigated, Diorec was arrested for possession of child pornography and tampering with physical evidence.
It is a case that's no stranger to police here in Anchorage.
"We had people who were taking photographs though little holes in the walls in women's bathrooms and things like that," said Anchorage Police Department Lieutenant Dave Parker.
Lieutenant Parker says it's a crime that's always been around, but has become more sophisticated now that cameras are smaller and discrete.
"We have seen peeping toms, basically they're anonymous sexual encounters that they're fantasizing about and then actually executing by looking into people's homes," said Parker.
Police say one problem with these kinds of addiction-based crimes is they are serial crimes that get worse and worse and often end up with someone getting hurt.
Parker explained, "Often they'll start with pornography, or often they'll start with peeping into people's homes, and then they go beyond. They fantasize further and further until finally they come to the point where they're forcibly raping people or they're sexually taking advantage of real live children, instead of looking simply at the images."
That is why people need to understand that these kinds of people are out there.
"We've had people who were, for instance, stopped at Goose Lake Park in the summertime, who were video taping children who were having their diapers changed things like that, truly perverted sexual behavior. There's just no way around it, and the object of their sexuality was children," said Parker.
Police say that's why people need to be aware of their surroundings and aware of what is going on around them.
Parker addressed, "If a woman feels like there may be someone peeping in windows, make sure those windows are closed. Often, people tell us, you know, I just got the feeling that somebody was watching me, and I turned around and there was this face in the window."
Police urge Alaskans to take precautions in order to protect yourself.
"It's making sure your door is locked, making sure there aren't any easy entry points into your home. Burglar alarms, things like that are very helpful, and there are some relatively inexpensive ones that can be put on doors and windows that are localized to the door and windows," said Parker.
