Police Release 911 Calls of Man Who Beat 7-Year-Old GirlByron Syvinski could not say why he needed help. The man accused of beating a 7-year-old girl nearly to death was, himself, in distress. That much is clear in the 911 recordings that CBS 11 obtained this morning through a public records request. Byron Syvinski, 32, called police repeatedly, for three hours -- the day before police say he brutally attacked the young girl in his Midtown neighborhood. But Syvinski could not say why he needed help. There were nine telephone contacts altogether, lasting from a couple minutes to more than 20, even capturing Syvinski being taken into protective custody at his home in the 3300 block of Eide Street. The phone calls depict a desperate but unfocused man who threatened suicide without naming the demons that were stalking him. One answer we don't have tonight: why the staff at Providence Psychiatric Emergency Department chose to let him go later that day -- the day before 7-year-old Am-Marie Martin nearly lost her life. Charging documents say Syvinski had accosted others in the neighborhood on Sunday, June 5, before suddenly attempting to take a bicycle from Am-Marie and then punching her in the head repeatedly when she refused to get off of it. Syvinski seemingly had been going through a crisis the previous day, June 4. “I’m in danger to myself right now,” Syvinski told a dispatcher. “OK, well, we can help you with that,” she replied. He continued: “I just **ing I’m about to ***ing jump over this ***ing thing ... Jump over this ***ing railing -- hello?” “I’m here, I’m here,” the dispatcher reassured him. From just after 7:30 to about 10:30 that morning, Syvinski talked repeatedly with dispatchers on his cell phone, from multiple locations. He also made contact with officers and was given a ride home from Wal-Mart, but continued to call 911, even though he struggled to explain what was bothering him. “What do you need an officer for? An officer already took you home,” a dispatcher pressed him. “Because of certain people around me right now, that I’ve seen, that almost tried to run me over,” he said. “They wouldn't be trying to run you over if you stayed home,” she advised him. Syvinski mentioned, vaguely, problems with his mother, brother and neighbors. He seemed to hyperventilate at times, prompting one dispatcher to ask: “What do you need? What do you need, Byron? You need the paramedics?” Finally, officers took Syvinski into protective custody and drove him to the Providence Psychiatric Emergency Room. He was released later that day. Police Lt. Dave Parker says department protocol was followed in dealing with Syvinski, and police had no authority to hold him because no crime had been committed. "There were no threats that he made towards other people -- no threats towards the dispatchers, no threats towards the officers." Providence does not generally inform police about how they deal with patients in the psych ward. "In terms of psychological evaluation, we all understand that that's an imperfect science,” Parker said. “I would hate to be in a situation where I had to make those kinds of evaluations because I don't have the qualifications to do that." A Providence spokeswoman declined to discuss Syvinski, citing federal privacy laws. In an emailed statement, she added: "However, we can speak generally about how patients are served in providence's psychiatric emergency department. These patients are provided a thorough assessment for both medical and psychiatric conditions. Based on this evaluation, they are treated and referred as appropriate."

Prov screws up yet again. Don't see why people think they are so great. I've seen them make mistakes again and again and I really don't deal with them much

"They wouldn't be trying to run you over if you stayed home"? Seriously!? I don't even know what to say to that, except some things that would get this comment flagged.

Their pay checks cash on payday even if they make the wrong call. It's a tough job I am sure but the fact remains this is yet another example of communication break down. If Prov did have the full scoop on his previous calls then they botched it by not doing a longer hold for evaluation. Either way people got paid good money to screw this up & that little girls has to live with those decisions. What ever happened to common sense?

This is absolutely the police and psychiatric people that providences fault. The man tried to get help and basically both the police and the hospital brushed them off. Nobody calls 911 numerous times during the day with problems like he had in the way he spoke. The dispatches should of known that there was a serious problem there and send officers much sooner. I don't blame this person. He obviously has psychiatric problem and he tried very hard to get someone to help them and no one would. The police, the police dispatcher, the Providence Hospital, should all be held to blame for this. If they had done their job properly this would not have happened.

Very true, the police were more interested in making money by writing tickets for something, heck with helping someone who needs it, probably cant pay. cops are more interested in meeting browny points for tickets issued.

Prov is the worst place for patients with Phyc disorders. They treat their patients horribly, if I were the parents of that child I would sue every one of them. They are totally at fault here. The police are not equiped to deal with such people and Prov has the facilities just not the common sense they needed to have to see this guy was in serious trouble. Shame on Providence Psychiatric Emergency Department for letting another patient and family down.

The police and 911 operators or the prov people aren't infallable. They handle the problem with what little they known. The person in question could of made a scene at the psych evaluation if he was that worry about what he would do then they would of kept him longer. they are not psychic. It is easy to blame other people for the problem. They do what they can do to help everyone. Strange I haven.t seen any police or hopital personnel walk on water But they get blamed or are held accountable for everything that goes wrong.

The cops did their job. They got the man to a hospital to be evaluated. I guess many of you would want the cops to evaluate you if you were picked up? Personally, I prefer someone trained instead!

Perhaps he should have been brought to A.P.I. for a check-up from the neck-up. Sounds like a drug induced psychosis.

Get off the Psyc disorders, its drug induced. Most crime these days are. Throw the book at the bum and send him to prison. Put him in general population.Let him see how it feels to get beat to a pulp.Disgusting excuse and the sacum should pay.
