Pile of Trash at UAA Demonstrates Recycling NeedGarbage from one day on campus is visual reminderANCHORAGE - A large pile of garbage on the UAA campus is there to make a point. It’s actually just a portion of the trash collected on the university campus on a single day. The display is an event for “America Recycles Day," to remind students and staff that many of the items in the pile don’t have to be thrown away. UAA’s Director of Sustainability, Paula Williams, said students were pausing to look, and hopefully getting the message as well. “It’s a quite a bit,” said Williams, referring to the large pile of garbage bags outside the Cuddy Center. Surveys show about 80 percent of the staff at UAA regularly recycles, but it’s not known how many students do. Williams says every building on campus has recycling bins, the challenge is to get more people to use them. |
