If information like your social security number was stolen, you can report it to the three main credit agencies so your credit won't be touched.


"Let them know that your social security number was stolen, if that was the case, or may have been involved in a data breach," said Sims.


Officials at the Educational Credit Management Corporation are offering anyone who has been affected a year's worth of credit monitoring and anti theft insurance of up to $25,000.
