ANCHORAGE - It’s no surprise that people love their pets and retailers say they are spending more to prove it.

In fact, for many people, buying presents for their pets has become a holiday tradition.

At the Anchorage Petco store, Don Lauver is on the hunt for stocking stuffers for his two rat terriers.

“I shop for presents every time I come in here because they feel like they are neglected if I don’t,” said Lauver.

Paris Kinmon is also shopping for her pets.

“I’m out Christmas shopping all day, so I thought I’d come in and get something for the pets.”

As long as pets are considered part of the family, their owners will be happy to indulge them. And there’s a wide range of choices, from holiday themed treats to every type of apparel.

But for pets that appreciate a more original approach to fashion, there are options.

Ellen Arvold is getting the models ready for an annual canine fashion show at her store, Second Run. Now in its seventh year, the show has become widely popular.

“In fact we have people calling us months ahead of time to see if their dog can be in our show.”

Arvold stocks handmade dog sweaters and other knits at her store. She said they are big sellers year round but especially at the holidays.
