ANCHORAGE - A new dog park planned in Midtown is good news for city dogs who spend a lot of their days cooped up indoors.

Tomorrow the Midtown Community Council will be meeting with the city's Parks and Recreation Department to discuss the final details of turning the park at 31st and Arctic Boulevard into a fenced dog park, the first of its kind in the state. Midtown Community Council members say the park isn't used very much and dog owners nearby could benefit from a place within walking distance for their dogs to play.

The project was made possible through an $83,000 state grant.

A few miles away at Connors Bog, people walked their dogs on trail system that isn't fenced, but owner Judy Middleton said she could see the benefit. She said it would be especially useful for younger, less trained puppies. "There's always that fear of them running in the traffic," she said.

Having a place for dogs to roam is important said dog owner Michele Shapiro. "They get real grumpy if they don't get to have a little adventure from time to time," she said referring to her two small dogs.

Kenall Galloso-Richardson said he's heard about fenced dog parks in the Lower 48. He said getting out is important for his dog who spend a lot of time inside while he's at work.

The Midtown Community Council is hoping for a showing of support from dog owners at its meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Spenard Recreation Center.

Dog park will keep the bums out and bums and druggies do occupied that park quite often. Parks that is occupided by bums and druggies do not served the community one iota. Having vacationed in Honolulu alot, half of their parks are totally unusable by their neighborhoods use to infestation of homeless and druggies. I think this is a good idea.

Nancy, This park improvement is so that the kids in the area can have a safe place to play. There is low income housing nearby and the park has been such a problem with bums that the children are afraid to play there. By placing this dog park at that location, it guarantees that there will be people in the community there, self policing, making the park much safer. The kids deserve a safe place to play and our disabled veterans and elderly also should have a place where they can exercise their dogs and connect with the community. Being disabled can be very isolating. This isn't about other peoples' dogs. This is about making Midtown safer for its residents.

Would be a better use than the drug deals and homeless drunks puking/sleeping there now. And stop worrying Nancy- it isn't your money. State grant $ don't come from property taxes.

It's not the first in the state - Fairbanks has 2 fenced dog parks! One is near the Carlson Center and the other (less used) is south of Airport off of Wilbur.

I'll bet there is kids with no home that would like the monies {83,000.} spent on human, if a person can't afford all their pet needs then they don't need one. I can't afford to pay bills for other peoples dogs.
