Mt. View Strives to Improve Image; Neighborhood Celebrates Progress
Residents say they fight a constant battle to change the neighborhood’s reputation as being “crime-ridden.”

On Saturday hundreds of Mountain View residents took part in an annual community event to celebrate the positive side of the neighborhood at Lions Park. The event was free and included food, entertainment and music.

“I always come back. It’s a great neighborhood,” said Beverly Phillips, a neighbor who attended the event.

Residents say they fight a constant battle to change the neighborhood’s reputation as being “crime-ridden” and believe that events like the Mountain View community celebration help change the negative stereotypes people may have when they think about the area.

“I wouldn’t let my kids be walking out at night themselves no matter which neighborhood in Anchorage,” said Wendy Morales, a mother at the event.

Lions Park was recently cleaned up and has had several upgrades—families believe these improvements were much needed.

“Seems like the community is coming together to make it a better place to live,” said Morales.

Lions Clubs across Anchorage hosted the community event.
