More Businesses Falling Prey to Embezzlement and Theft

Companies should be aware of employees who handle money, as a recent case illustrates

It could be someone we know, someone we trust to handle our finances, who often times starts as the perfect employee and ends up becoming a criminal.

And the scary part is it’s happening all the time in homes, businesses, even in schools.

The most recent case comes from Chugiak High School, where former secretary Brenda Burge is accused of taking $75,000 over four years from student parking and sports fees.

APD’s Financial Crimes Unit says often times the crime never gets prosecuted because most people don’t have the resources to figure out what was taken and by who, or don’t realize something happened until it’s too late because they never suspected the person who ran away with the cash.

Another frustration for police is most businesses come to report fraud and embezzlement but don’t know how much they actually lost because investigation services are costly.

But there is a group of UAA students who are trying to change that by bringing the real world right into their classroom. Coming up on CBS 11 News at Ten on Monday, I’ll introduce you to the Justice for Fraud Victims project and its quest to help solve crimes.

Should be allowed to shoot the embezzlers in the knee's or elbows.Brand them as low life criminal on the forehead, so no one else will hire them.
