Mobile Billboard Advertises the End of the World

Earthquakes, tornados, flooding.... all of it's having some people seriously question whether or not this is it: The end of the world.

Among Christians, the debate is about the date -- not whether there is a coming end of days, but whether it's possible to know when it is.

With a string of recent disasters, both natural and man-made, is it the end of the world -- or just as we know it?

"If we're living in the last days, judgment day is coming, Pastor Jerry Prevo preached on the book of Revelation at Anchorage Baptist Temple this past Sunday.

Prevo was inspired in part by a pair of mobile billboards that have been driving Anchorage's major arteries for the past two weeks. Call them the doomsday vans, or the apocalypse-mobiles.

The message, sponsored by the Family Radio group of Oakland, California, is that a mathematical formula within the Bible shows that Christians will be raptured into heaven on May 21, at the same time that five months of unprecedented calamities begin on earth.

"An earthquake quite unlike any earthquake that has ever occurred, and will make the Japanese earthquake appear to be child's play in comparison,” says Tom Evans of Family Radio.

Evans says that the exact date can be calculated using the genealogy in Genesis to determine the date of the flood for which Noah built the ark, and then interpreting another passage to refer to the end of the world on the 7,000th anniversary of that cataclysm.

But Pastor John Carpenter at Baxter Bible Church says that scripture is clear that the date is not predictable, even though he believes the world could be close to the rapture and the seven-year tribulation period that is prophesied to see the rise of the Antichrist.

"The Bible says the world is going to end, it's going to happen, but it does say that, you know, we don't know the time; we don't know the day or the hour. I think it's important -- God did that on purpose. He didn't want us focusing on a time. I think He wants us to be ready."

A visiting Jehovah's Witness from Maui is handing out tracts in Anchorage saying that the end is near, but he also questions any specific prediction.

"We don't know when it is but we know with all the earthquakes and disasters and people's attitudes the way they are in the world today, we know that we're really close right now,” said Mike Mackey. “We're really close."

Prevo senses the end times even in the growing national debt of the United States.

"And maybe this is an indication that we're living in the last days. And that the rapture is not too far away. And the tribulation period is not too far away."

So the debate continues. Until the end of the world.

(The Family Radio group leader, Harold Camping, falsely predicted the end of the world once before, saying in 1992 that it would occur in 1994.)

Prevo is no better than every other scam artist alive today. He owns a huge house, 2 private planes and who knows how many really nice cars. A TRUE man of God would not have any of this. A TRUE man of God would live in a small apartment and ride a bike to and from church.

Jehovah's Witnesses said the world was going to end in 1914! LOL It's ALL a scam. Religion is for people who need to belong to a group and don't fit in anywhere else. Truly the 'opium of the masses' as Marx pointed out.

How about all he religious people wanting this go ahead and wait. Its another 1999 Dec 31. We need to concentrate on repairing what our 'leaders' have destroyed and fix the environment. Because 'they' will try to leave us high and dry. Besides, it's man that causes 99.9% of problems for other men/women.

Christ warned of false teachers especially in the last days. He also gave no prohibition on wealth. God cares more about us then the planet. Get your priorities straight people, God IS weather you believe it or not. We should be good stewards of what He gives us but when an astroid the size of manhatten hits the planet it won't matter how much co2 is in the air. By the way co2 is organic. It is green...really.

So there are many, MANY Christians who believe that some sort of "Rapture" will indeed eventually occur, and that millions of people all over the world will suddenly vanish into thin air leaving nothing but their clothes and dentures behind. That sounds nutty enough to me. All Harold Camping has done is predicted a date. Does that somehow make him nuttier? Since the death of Jesus, people in every generation for over 2,000 years and hundreds of generations have wanted to be the one that experiences the end of days. None has. There must be a clue in there somewhere for you. If you waited at a bus stop for 2,000 years, at what point would you conclude that the bus wasn't coming? Or would you just stand there … FOREVER … because somebody had stuck up a "bus stop" sign?

On Feb. 14, 1835 FLDS/LDS founder Joseph Smith said, "... go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, or the coming of the lord, which was nigh even fifty-six years should wind up the scene" (LDS Published History of the Church, Vol. 2, p. 182).

Your LDS Belief is just a total lie...you need to study your church grounds and see for yourself how misleading your J.Smith's writtings belief are. I feel for all you LDS!! My prayers are you may come to know the Power in the Blood of Jesus Christ.

Hey, when you guys get raptured and head up to heaven in your pajamas and all (By the way, I'm assuming y'all won't be naked in the sky on your way up because that would be a natural disaster in itself.) Anyway, when you leave, can I like use your power tools and cars and TVs and stuff that you leave behind? I mean, if you are wrong about all of the rest us catching on fire and stuff down here, you won't be needing your stuff, right? Just asking. God Bless.

These predictions only work because of the fear of death at God's hands for not listening to Pastor whoever. When God does intervene it will be a kindness not a slaughter - from the loving God we all know in our hearts - and our salvation will be entirely because of Him, not because of the warning or membership of any church. Fear God in terms of respect, yes, but remember He is not a bully - He is your Father.
