ALASKA - The pilot of a missing plane who lost contact with the U.S. Coast Guard has been confirmed dead after his plane was found Thursday afternoon.

The white and teal Piper Cherokee registered to Air Excursions LLC had been missing since 9 a.m. Thursday.

It was found by a rescue team at about 3 p.m. Thursday near Point Howard in the Tongass National Forest, 23 miles west of Juneau.

The pilot was found dead at the crash site.

His name has not yet been released.
