Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District superintendent Dr. Kenneth Burnley passed away suddenly Saturday morning from complications after surgery.

Burnley had been with the district just over a year.

He had scheduled knee replacement surgery on Wednesday and early this morning, district officials received word from his family that he had passed away.

The news comes as a shock for those who met with Burnley in the hospital to talk about district business just a few days ago.

“I have been in education for over 28 years. I’ve been a teacher, principal [and a] superintendent. I probably learned more working with Dr. Burnley in the capacity that I am now in one year than I probably learned in all those years,” said Mike Dunleavy, president of the Mat-Su Borough School Board.

A memorial celebration of life for Dr. Kenneth Burnley is scheduled for Friday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at Teeland Middle School.

The public is invited to attend.
