The American Lung Association hosted its second annual 'Breathe Easy' breakfast yesterday to inform the community on what it has been doing in Alaska and nationally to fight for air.
The first American woman to summit Mount Everest, Stacy Allison, was the keynote speaker, giving her mission to motivate people beyond limitations. She has also reached the top of Mount McKinley, and has written several books on her triumph on Everest.
However, these accomplishments have provided the groundwork and experience to extend well beyond mountains.
"The reason I decided to join the Lung Association as the chair person is because its a way for me to use my skills use my knowledge to give back to the community," Allison said. "And of course breathing is something we all do that we take for granted sometimes but its so important for life."
One in ten are affected by lung disease each year, but 160,000 lives were saved in 2010 because of the clean air act.
