Bursting at its Seams, Alaska Humane Society Needs Help

The Alaska Humane Society is hoping Alaskans will open their hearts and homes to some of the 200 cats they have in their no-kill shelter. But, in order to stay open they need to raise money to renovate their building or the city could shut them down.

The Alaska Humane Society has a big problem on its hands, too many cats and not enough cash. The shelter needs to sink some major money into renovating its building or the city could shut them down. Workers worry that if that happens they may have to put down many of the cats as well.

The shelter has a “no kill” policy, which means they don’t turn animals away and they don’t put them down. Of the 200 or more cats at the shelter right now some are feral and non-adoptable. Many were dropped off in the middle of the night. The shelter is so full now that they can’t take any more.

Workers want to reduce the number of cats at the shelter with a special adoption fair on Saturday September 24th from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. Adoptable cats will be available for $85 dollars for one or $150 dollars for a pair. All of the animals are spade or neutered, have their shots and are micro-chipped.

The Adopt A Cat Fair takes place at the shelter, which is located in the back of a warehouse complex.
The address is 1224 E. 76th Avenue.

In addition, the shelter is trying to raise money for an expensive ventilation system the city says it needs to keep its operating license. Workers say they need to raise at least 60 thousand dollars by early December in order to have the work done and stay open.

The fundraising effort is taking place on line. You can find them at www.adopt-a-cat.org
They also have information there on the adoption fair.

no pets in rentals? WHY? said on Tuesday, Sep 27 at 7:00 AM

Becaues the MAJORITY of renters, not only don't take pride & care in the property they rent, most times actually abuse it.Recently there was this fool who allowed his DOG to urinate on the deck above another apartment & the urine dripped to the lower deck. The owner was LAZY, selfish and very immature. If I owned an apt I would NEVER allow pets. Cats urine (on rugs) can NEVER get the smell out. Ask any carpet cleaner. If you live in an apt. get a fish.

I was moved into a no-kill shelter for old people and couldn't keep my cat. I visit him every week and donate what I can. He waits by the chair where I sit and sits on my lap till I have to leave. He doesn't understand why I don't take him home with me. I thank God for the volunteers who care for him every day. And by the way the word is spayed not spade. Thanks for doing the story.

The problem I see is that there are many people who would love to take in a cat or dog from the shelter, but they live (like me and my family) in apartments which refuse to allow pets. Why cant the government MAKE these @$$hole landlords allow pets in their units?

I wasn't going to be quite THAT cold about it, but I do think anyone with half a brain should be far more concerned with the homeless children in Anchorage than these cats. I'm an animal lover, and have a dog and cat, but I still feel humans take priority.

Simply use the cats to feed the homeless is idea #1. Idea #2 would be science projects for the kids. Idea # 3 Sell them to the Chinese restaurants in Alaska, anything has to be better than what they serve now.
