Legislator Proposes Bill to Allow Armed School EmployeesMeasure wouldn't mandate guns in schoolsANCHORAGE - One local lawmaker says kids might be safer if teachers carried guns. It's part of a bill proposed by Representative Bob Lynn (R-Anchorage). His legislation leaves the decision of whether teachers or other school employees are armed in the schools to the school administrators. Lynn said after Newtown, he started thinking that there needs to be a conversation on what more administrators can do to make sure that kind of violence never happens again. "With all the craziness going on around the country, I think it's time for a serious dialog on how to protect our precious children." He said this bill wouldn't mandate teachers have guns if that's not what the administration wanted. "This bill simply allows local authorities, local school districts to have a dialogue on just that." Mike Abbot, the Chief Operating Officer of the Anchorage School District said this isn't the kind of thing that school administrators usually take a position on. He hadn't a chance to read the legislation, but he said, "Generally the district has been comfortable with the current state prohibition on firearms in the school areas. But the board will have a chance to revisit that if they're so inclined." The bill will be up for review by the Legislature when the new session begins in Juneau. That starts next Tuesday. |

I am a regualar shooter at a range. Anyone who tells me an individual who has two day of NRA training with a handgun is qualifed to defend a school is a fool. Without on-going range time the individual does not have adiquate shooting skill to be more than a danger to anyone within the range of thier handgun. This quick fix of armed guards and or armed teachers is no a long term solution but a reaction of those who falsely believe this is a solution to an extreamly complex issue. I

This is not a good bill..just to let any school employee carry a gun in classrooms etc. it very unwise. teachers are trained to be teachers..there are many sutdents in a classroom.\ very few just any school employee types would be able to handle situations like this well..in a situation like that it could easily get more confusing with the results of that. there should be no doubt the high magazines as a way for any average citizen is simply not needed. They were used in all of the many recent shooting and in Columbine Colorado school shooting as well. as Biden and President Obama said there are many aspects to this now very common situation in this country and no absolute safe way to guaranteed an innocent person will not be shot ever...but there are sensible solutions to make this type of situation much safer..all school employees carring guns is not one of them.

Be less confrontational if we place security measures similar to that of the Airport detectors and xray machines and metal wands used by reputable security or police (which are paid consistently to sit in several schools anyway. Eliminate the GUNS, don't add them within the schools. Use our brains, not our gut reactions.

I don't think that teachers should be allowed to carry guns in school. I think that you need to hire a full time police trained employee that can teach survival skills, boating, hunting, outdoor activities, gun safety, etc.
