The bars to the new Kodiak jail could be opening and closing within week.

"We're looking at the end of January, or for sure by February," Kodiak city manager Aimée Kniaziowski said.

Delays are due to getting jail furniture and fixtures in place.

"Once that's completed the (police) chief has to go through and make sure the contractors didn't leave anything behind," Kniaziowski said. "They have to inspect and secure the building."

The order for the specially made furniture was put in a couple months ago and it made it to Kodiak around Dec. 20. The construction crew had to come back for installation of the metal furniture, which needs to be bolted to the floors.

Due to change orders, the total cost of the police station and jail is $25.3 million, an increase of more than $1.5 from estimates last fall.

"As we're getting ready to close out the project and fine tune all the last numbers, we are in the process of adjusting the budget for this project," Kniaziowski said.

A budget amendment for $1.1 million will cover the cost. There were some additional costs authorized by the city council.

"This is a sizable adjustment that will cover everything," Kniaziowski said.

An environmental assessment was also prepared for the emergency operations center, at a cost of more than $40,000. The city found out it wasn't necessary, but preparation for the document had already been completed.

"So they're (unbudgeted costs) just costs associated with awarding the construction, land and permitting costs and the environmental assessment," Kniaziowski said. "When we awarded the contract, we didn't calculate contingencies."
