Koahnic Broadcast Corporation, owner of KNBA in Anchorage, held its 16th annual art auction Thursday at the Dena’ina Center.

Koahnic is an Athabascan word for "live air" and the broadcasting corporation is considered the flagship of national native news; it is also the first native station based in an urban center.

All funds from the Thursday auction go to programming as well as support for the organization.

“As we know, public radio has been under the gun for funding, for federal funding. Aside from that it’s just really important for our growth and strength,” said KBC Board of Directors Chair Kathy Mayo.

Koahnic has 33 native stations nationwide.
