In a joint press conference Thursday, the founder of Cafe Del Mundo, Perry Merkel, announced his retirement and the sale of his business to Kaladi Brothers Coffee.

Cafe Del Mundo was started up 36 years ago as the first coffee roaster in Alaska.

But even with the sale to Kaladi, both brands will remain separate and the Cafe Del Mundo store on Benson Blvd. will remain open selling its signature roasted brew.

"We want it to stay in town," said Kaladi Brothers Coffee President Tim Gravel.

"We don’t want to see it disappear or change to anybody else's name, so it is really important to us that it stays Cafe Del Mundo and keeps a lot of the same feel."

All 23 employees of Cafe Del Mundo are expected to keep their jobs and as a thank you for years of loyalty, Cafe Del Mundo will host a customer appreciation day Saturday, April 2, when all coffee drinks will be free.
