Human Body Exhibits Battle for Exposure

Museum and State Fair each have shows featuring the human body

ANCHORAGE - Is there room in town for two human body exhibits? It’s a question that will be answered soon when first, the Alaska State Fair and then the Anchorage Museum host two separate but similar shows.

The museum said it started planning its exhibit, a traveling show called Body Worlds Vital, more than two years ago. In late June they got word that the State Fair had booked a similar show called Live Healthy.

State Fair officials said they had no idea about the museum when they were negotiating the terms for their own.

“We both pursued this independently, so at that point we were both too far in the process to back out. It would have cost us a lot of money,” says the Fair’s Dean Phipps.

The two exhibits will be similar. Each will offer visitors a chance to see real human bodies, focusing on organs and other vital systems under the skin.

But there is one important difference; the museum will charge a separate fee to see its show while the fair will offer it for free, included in the price of admission.

Museum officials said that may not work against them - especially if people like what they see at the fair.

“That’s what we are hoping, is that people who see the exhibit at the fair will get a taste of it and then want to come here and see it,” said the Museum’s Janet Asaro.

The body show at the fair will be open every day from August 23 through September 3.

The museum exhibit is around a lot longer, from September 28th through January 6th.
