Halibut and Black Cod Season StartsCommercial fishermen will be permitted to catch up to 33 million pounds of halibut and 35 million pounds of black cod this year.Nearly 1200 boats were expected to head out to sea today for the first day of Alaska’s halibut and black cod season. Commercial fishermen are permitted to catch up to 33 million pounds of halibut and 35 million pounds of black cod in this year's harvest. Alaska has one of the largest pacific halibut and black cod populations in the world. With less and less oil in Alaska pipelines, the fishing industry believes it will be able to shine for the state's economy this season. “Its wild Alaska fish,” says Tyson Fick, Communications Director for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. “There's no way to farm those fish that anybody's come up with yet, so the vast majority of the fish all comes from Alaska.” A recent Northern economic study estimates the Alaska seafood industry brings in about 5 point 8 billion dollars a year. Alaska halibut and black cod season runs through mid-November. |
