Hundreds of Anchorage families are getting the help they need to get a good start to the school year.

Students are paired up with personal shoppers to choose backpacks, coats and school supplies.

Organizers of HUGSS, Help Us Give School Supplies, said that connecting kids from low-income families with school supplies get them ready and excited to learn.

“We want kids to be excited. We want them to pick out their own backpack, we want them to have new school supplies, we want them to go back to school prepared…They have a coat, they have a new backpack, they have school supplies, they have what their peers have—they are ready to learn,” said Ellen Krsnak from Catholic Social Services.

Program organizers expect to serve more than 5,500 children by Tuesday when the program ends.
