Former Lieutenant Governor Named President, COO of Alaska Aerospace

When Craig Campbell bowed out of the race to continue as Alaska’s lieutenant governor in April, he told the Anchorage Daily News he would rather run an organization.



As announced Monday, that organization will be the Alaska Aerospace Corporation (AAC). Campbell has accepted the position of president and chief operating officer, effective Feb. 15.



AAC owns and operates the Kodiak Launch Complex at Narrow Cape.


In an interview with the Kodiak Daily Mirror, Campbell said goals for his tenure as president include expanding scheduled launches, engaging more commercial customers and expanding AAC’s mission to include other aspects of aerospace science.


“Alaska Aerospace Corporation has established a premier launch complex at Kodiak and is well positioned to capitalize on advanced space launch and aerospace industry opportunities for Alaska,” Campbell said in a press release accompanying the announcement. “I look forward to being part of a dynamic team, focused on business growth that will stimulate more aerospace investment in Alaska and create more high-skilled job opportunities for Alaskans.”



Campbell’s support of the AAC precedes the announcement of his appointment. Last year, as Alaska’s lieutenant governor, he traveled with AAC chief executive officer Dale Nash and current president and chief operating officer Tom Case to Colorado to meet with the commander of the Air Force Space Command and discuss bringing more projects to the Kodiak Launch Complex.



In a guest editorial later published in the Mirror, Campbell said the launch complex should not be kept a secret.



“The site has matured to the point where Alaska needs to be more proactive in marketing the capabilities and opportunities for increased use, both government and civilian,” Campbell wrote.



The change in leadership was announced by Nash, who said he was pleased to land Campbell for the company.



“He brings a wealth of state and federal government experience which will be invaluable as we pursue a more diversified business portfolio in aerospace across Alaska,” Nash said.



Campbell’s experience includes his appointment as lieutenant governor in 2009 by Sarah Palin. In 2003 he was named commissioner for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and adjutant general in charge of the Alaska National Guard.



Campbell has master’s degrees in public administration and in national security and strategic studies.



Departing president Case joined the AAC in April 2008. He will replace Fran Ulmer as chancellor for the University of Alaska Anchorage.
